Web Standards (a la W3C) are a touchy topic, and especially hard to stress for clients who aren’t very Web-literate. And even if they are, standards can sometimes take a back seat when developing the product. I wrote an article for WebDevLounge that aims to sum up why Web standards are important, and also why clients don’t care about standards-compliant code.
I suggest you take a look especially if you’re unconvinced yourself or have a client who needs some convincing.
It’s often an uphill battle when it comes to explaining the importance of web standards to our clients. Web designers and developers tend to rant on about accessible design and valid HTML while forgetting the fact that many of our clients just don’t care. In fact, many developers don’t bother with it either, and that may be part of the problem why Web standards are given far less emphasis than they deserve.
